THE GRE EXAM DETAILS

WHAT IS THE GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is an aptitude test conducted by Educational Testing Services (ETS). The GRE score is one of the required criteria for admission to thousands of MS and MBA programs worldwide. Most universities in the US, while inviting applications from prospective students, ask for GRE scores. The GRE score is a reliable indicator of your academic performance in today’s graduate programs.

FEATURES OF THE GRE?

The GRE exam is conducted entirely in English. The test is administered in two formats – computer based test and paper pencil test. The quantitative and verbal sections of the computer based test are section wise computer adaptive, which means sections are chosen for you based on how you have answered previous sections. So, if you do well on the first section, the next section asked is more difficult and vice - versa. However within each section the questions are not computer adaptive.

FORMAT OF THE GRE?

The GRE is a 3 hours and 45 minutes test (entire test slot is of 4 hours with the breaks included) carrying a maximum score of 340 points, and consists of the following six sections:

1) AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment) – 1 section – 1hr - Two 30minute Essays
2) Quant ( Quantitative Reasoning ) – 2 sections – 35 minutes each section – 20 questions each section
3) Verbal ( Verbal Reasoning ) – 2 sections – 30 minutes each section – 20 questions each section
4) One Experimental or Research section – 1 section – timing varies
The writing section is the first section and each of the other sections may appear in any order.

There is a 10 -minute break following the third section and a 1-minute break between the other test sections.

Let’s look at each of these sections in detail:

Analytical Writing Assessment

This is the first section on the GRE and consists of 2 separately times 30 minute essay writing tasks:

1. Analyze an Issue
2. Analyze an Argument

The Analytical Writing section measures:

1. Your ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
2. How well you can support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
3. Your command over the elements of standard written English

AWA is not counted towards the overall score. Instead, the score range for AWA ranges from 0-6, with increments of 0.5.

Quantitative Ability

This Quant section on the GRE consists of 2 separately times 35 minute sections with 20 questions each consisting of:

1. Arithmetic                                2. Geometric
3. Algebra                                   4. Data Analysis

The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your ability to:

1. Interpret and analyze quantitative information
2. Apply basic mathematical skills and elementary mathematical concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics

Test takers get a separate score in the range of 130 - 170 for the Quant section and this section contributes towards your total score out of 340.

Verbal Ability

This Verbal section on the GRE consists of 2 separately times 30 minute sections with 20 questions each consisting of:

1. Reading Completion
2. Text Completion
3. Sentence Equivalence

The Verbal Reasoning section measures your ability to:

1. Analyze and draw conclusions from discourse, reason from incomplete data, identify author’s assumptions and/or perspective, understand multiple levels of meaning, such as literal, figurative and author’s intent
2. Select important points; distinguish major from minor or relevant points; summarize text; understand the structure of a text
3. Understand the meanings of words, sentences and entire texts; understand relationships among words and among concepts

Test takers get a separate score in the range of 130 - 170 for the Quant section and this section contributes towards your total score out of 340.

Test takers get four scores on the GRE score report.

1. AWA score out of 6.0
2. Quant score in the range 130-170
