WHAT IS THE IELTS?



The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who want to study or work in a country where English is the language of communication. IELTS is recognized by over 6,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies.



FEATURES OF THE IELTS?



IELTS is offered up to four times a month in more than 125 countries. Tests are usually on Saturdays or Thursdays. IELTS is internationally focused in its content. For example, a range of native-speaker accents (North American, Australian, New Zealand, and British) is used in the Listening test, and all standard varieties of English are accepted in candidates’ responses in all parts of the test.




FORMAT OF THE IELTS?



There are two modules to choose from – Academic and General Training.

The Academic module is for candidates who wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and for those seeking professional registration.

The General Training module is for candidates wishing to migrate to an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK), and for those wishing to train or study at below degree level.

Both modules cover all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. Everyone takes the same Listening and Speaking tests. There are different Reading and Writing tests for the Academic and General Training modules. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests must be completed on the same day. There are no breaks between the three written tests. The Speaking test may be taken up to seven days before or after the other three tests.

Listening



Timing: Approximately 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes transfer time)
Questions: Total 40 questions
Test Parts: There are 4 sections each with 10 questions
Marking: Each correct answer receives 1 mark .Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale



Reading



Timing: 60 minutes
Questions: Total 40 questions
Test Parts: There are 3 sections each having one passage
Marking: Each correct answer receives 1 mark .Scores out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9-band scale



Writing



Timing: 60 minutes
Tasks: There are 2 tasks. Candidates are required to write at least 150 words for Task 1 and at least 250 words for Task 2
Marking: Candidates are assessed on their performance on each task by certificated IELTS examiners


Speaking



Timing: 11-14 minutes
Tasks: The Speaking test is a 3-part face-to-face oral interview with an examiner. The Speaking test is recorded
Marking: Candidates are assessed on their performance throughout the test by certificated IELTS examiners





SCORING ON THE IELTS



The scoring is between 0 (Minimum) and 9 (Maximum) with 0.5 band increment.

Five scores are reported on the IELTSTM:

1) Reading score reported on a 0-9 band scale, with 0.5 band increment
2) Listening score reported on a 0-9 band scale, with 0.5 band increment
3) Writing score reported on a 0-9 band scale, with 0.5 band increment
4) Speaking score reported on a 0-9 band scale, with 0.5 band increment
5) Total score reported on a 0-9 band scale, with 0.5 band increment

The score report is available at the test centre (and mailed to the candidates) 13 days after the exam.

    What is the cost/registration fee for IELTS?

The registration fee for IELTSTM from July 1, 2013 is RS. 9300.

    How do I register for the IELTS?

    How many times in a year is the IELTS exam held?

IELTS is offered on specific days of the year. One can access the whole schedule which can vary depending on the country by following the given link www.ielts.org

    How many times can I take the IELTS?

IELTS can be taken unlimited number of times. (It is highly advisable not to appear for IELTS too many times as it may affect the applicant’s candidature).

    How soon do I get my score?

The scores are available 13 days after the exam date.

    How do I pass on my score to the college?

You may request for additional Test Report Form (TRF) to be dispatched directly by the test centre to the recognising institution / body. There is NO CHARGE for the additional TRF, but the candidate will have to pay a dispatch charge of Rs. 1,000/- if the candidate wishes to order dispatch by Courier or Rs. 250/- if the dispatch is by Registered Post

    What is the validity of the IELTS exam?

Your IELTS score will be valid for 2 years after from the date the test was taken.

THE TOEFL EXAM DETAILS



WHAT IS THE TOEFL?



The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardised test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers who want to study or work in a country where English is the language of communication. TOEFL is recognized by over 9,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies.



FEATURES OF THE TOEFL?



TOEFL is offered up to 50 times a year across 4500 test centers in more than 165 countries. The score is valid for two years. The fee for the test varies from $160 to $250, depending on the country (in India the fee is $165). The test has two versions – TOEFL internet based test (iBT), for locations where internet testing is possible, and TOEFL paper based test (PBT), for locations where internet testing is not possible.




FORMAT OF THE TOEFL?



The TOEFL iBT has four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

(One of the sections of the test will include extra, uncounted material which is being developed for future exams.)

Reading



Timing: 60-100 minutes
Questions: Total 36 - 70 questions
Test Parts: There are 3 - 5 passages, each approx. 700 words long, with 12 – 14 questions per passage
Marking: Reading score is reported on a 0-30 score scale



Listening



Timing: 60 - 90 minutes
Questions: Total 34 - 51 questions
Test Parts: There are 4 – 6 lectures, each 3 – 5 minutes long, having 6 questions each and 2 – 3 conversations, each 3 minutes long, having 5 questions each
Marking: Listening score is reported on a 0-30 score scale



Writing



Timing: 50 minutes (20 minutes for 1st task and 30 minutes for 2nd task)
Tasks: There are 2 tasks – 1st task to write based on what is read and heard and 2nd task to support an opinion on a topic
Marking: 0 – 5 points; total of ratings converted to 0 – 30 score scale



Speaking



Timing: 20 minutes
Tasks: There are 6 tasks – 2 tasks to express an opinion on a topic and 4 tasks to speak based on what is read and heard
Marking: 0 – 4 points; total of ratings converted to 0 – 30 score scale





SCORING ON THE TOEFL



The scoring is between 0 (Minimum) and 120 (Maximum) with 1point increments.

Five scores are reported on the TOEFL:

1) Reading score reported on a 0 – 30 score scale, with 1point increment
2) Listening score reported on a 0 – 30 score scale, with 1point increment
3) Writing score reported on a 0 – 30 score scale, with 1point increment
4) Speaking score reported on a 0 – 30 score scale, with 1point increment
5) Total score reported on a 0 to 120 score scale, with 1 point increment

The score report is available online 15 days after the exam.
